Thanks, guys.
Started by swapping the batteries – not the problem.
I’d suspected either total failure, or a loose connection – and eventually it tuned out to be a loose connection.
The wire that goes from the LED display to the board was loose at the board – it’s kinda easy to wrench that connection around when replacing that panel with the LED. And over about 8 months since I had previously checked/swapped the batteries, it eventually worked itself loose :-(.
