I’m looking to buy a used curved stairlift to fit myself and the Acorn 180 looked attractive with the single rail but some have said to not buy the Acorn as it’s not reliable and the Handicare 2000 was said to be a better choice.
I had looked at the Handicare Freecurve but apparently I couldn’t program it so that’s obviously a problem,
I have a Acorn 180 and it has not been real reliable. If you are handy you can probably make small repairs yourself. Major repairs can be difficult especially if you have to remove the unit from the rail. And of course if you have to call for service it could be quite expensive. I had a lot of problems with batteries made in China. I finally ordered batteries from CRC out of England that have 1 1/2 year warenty and they are great. Advantage of Acorn 180 is it is infinitely configurable and great for the DIY person. Handicare is probably a better choice but you would have to find one that was the same configuration as your stairs. If you do buy a Acorn I have a lot of extra track pieces (left hand config). Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks Tom, it wouldn’t be a problem looking after the moving parts of the stairlift but faults with the electronics would be more of a problem. Unfortunately I would need to fit the track on the right side.
Have fixed or re-installed four Acorn 180 versions. Manuals are version specific, especially with H7 and OSG errors. Most manuals lack several key “secrets” including one that should have been litigated in a class-action imo. Posts in the Acorn Facebook Users Group are at least 80% erroneous, incomplete, and lead to harmful or expensive breakdowns. Have three recent clients who got their Acorn 180 stairlifts for free.
