I thought it may be good to have a Tips and tricks thread as I’m sure every one has some little time saving ideas they’ve picked up along the way.
Here’s two I use quite often.If you need to check a remote handset (opto type) is working try filming it with your camera phone and it will show the led’s illuminating with each button press. The sensors in camera phones pick up a wider spetrum of light than our eyes.
If a lift has erratic operation or starts moving on its own and you can’t put your finger on the cause…try turning of any low energy lights in the area. It’s not uncommon for cheap or older low energy bulbs to put out light across the same spectrum as remotes – this can have the effect on some lifts of masking a call from the remotes and on others it can be interpretted by the lift as a call from the remotes. -
Don’t always work quite like that. I have an iPhone and that trick don’t work due to its advanced ir filter on the main camera.

Although the new iphones have a IR filter fitted to main camera, the same isn’t true for the front facing camera. Flip to the face time camera and there you go, you can see IR again!
