Stairlift stopped

Hello new so this is my first post and thanks for any answers to this 🙂 I was given a stairlift for my mam 97 and upon installing it, it worked initially just for a couple of up and downs whilst we set it up BUT…… my hubby placed the end stops in upside down so the short one was in the wrong channel….. it stopped working straight away with what seems no life whatsoever although it was perfect when we got it, we realised our error but…. it is a Simplicity 950 plus and the electric is still going to the little box near the plug and it is green. It is as if it has blown a fuse somewhere but….. Any thoughts please? I did ring the place where it was from originaly but they wouldnt send anyone out…. health and safety, they said 🙂 well theres no light at all on the unit…. Please can anyone advise? Thanks Pat

Small cam is a physical stop used as a final fail safe. fitting this incorrectly will damage terminal limit switches and final limit switch. In addittion if the unit has been set up incorrectly and its travel has been impeded, most likely the power pack fuse has opened. easy error to make. the carriage now requires an engineer to remove for closer inspection. I am guessing mam lives in the Northeast.

We live in the north west area Cumbria…….. yes Rob you are describing exactly what we did in the right words 🙂 wonder where we find an engineer. Thanks both for your replies up to now. Also please could you tell us where the power pack fuse is ;located so we could check this……. Shame really because it was just the error of putting these 2 cams the wrong way……..

Hi pat, there is a large panel on the lift ( with a black switch and an led fault code display on it ) remove the 3 retaining bolts – screws and that panel will come away, and take note of what the connections go to as you will need to remove these connections and replace them after, when the panel is out of the way you will see the bottom of a battery ( in a tray ) looking straight at you, underneath the tray will be a bolt loosen the bolt but not fully, then the tray will slide out towards you, however when it does make sure you disconect the black and red Waygo connection, once that’s done slide the battery tray all the way and away from the lift. Inbetween the two batteries you will find a 15A blade fuse, replace fuse put everything back together. Any more trouble give me a shout

its running but we are getting an error number five which is the lower limit switch ( when the chair is at the top and we try to call it down) prob because on one of the on and offs of the motor / seat we bent the last swith the third one along… we straightener it (the one with the little sort of rubber wheel on it) we straightened it but perhaps now quite enough. just got it off and the toggle switch on it is pressed in. so we’ll free it and see. were getting there…. it seems that the arm of the limit switch is a bit bent and just might be activating it at random so it might need a new one of these…… not too sure what to look for by name though…

It’s a shame not all Companies treat customers the same. Happy to have helped.

Ok update……. it is up and running but… as it stands we cant let it run tightly to the down position or it displays the 0 … it is the limit switch… when we read the numbers on the one we looked at and one we need it says… U83160.7 we went locally to see if we could get one but couldn’t but 2 of the 3 stores we went to were closed…….. I need this part asap but…. i did a search online but… if we stop the lift at its max run it errors so we wind it back just a couple of turns and its ok… OR if we just try to stop it a fraction short of the stop… its ok…. we need this limit switch.. please does anyone know a place for this…. THANKS so much Pat

We did get the lift running perfect…. we inspected it thoroughly and wondered how the bottom limit switch kept getting damaged, upon inspection I saw that the sort of longer cam that is shaped / chamfered at the end wah protruding and wasn’t flush with the rail because we had tightened the grub screws too far, lifting it away fron flush and it was not allowing the trip bar to go over correctly… I haven’t used the correct technical words here but, i’m sure anyone with a knowledge of the unit will know what I mean… so, now all is running perfect.. BUT PLEASE, if anyone can give a link to the trip switch U83160.7 id feel safer having one in just in case. Thank you all again 🙂 hope you can help with U83160.7

The adjustable end stop you are describing is an old type that caused a lot of problems with broken limit switches, they replaced it with a plastic spring type one which is a lot better. I would contact your local dealer and buy two and also get a replacement limit switch from them
I’m not from your area but if you can’t source them locally let me know and I could post some

I did contact the phone number on the book we were given with it and HECK they were so so so bad and because they didnt install it they wouldnt even talk about it to me, they were so bad mannered, but Please do you have the part name, Thank you. we did find out that the limit switch was an older discontinued part now but im not too sure of what superceded it

Limit switch ramp x2
End stop microswitch -

Replacing a limit switch on a 950 is not a simple plug and play job but that said you can buy the switches you want from any electronics supplyer (eg maplin). The ramps you will have to get from a dealer as Handicare won’t deal direct. They will like any manufactur want nothing to do with a self installed stairlift or lift not installed directly by them. Its a liability thing.

iirc The microswitch wiring is soldered on as well.

As these are limit switches, they are not just simply a Micro switches.
The type of switch to be fitted should be a failsafe-positive break switch. This offers protection in the event of contacts becoming stuck or welded together.I have a large volume of these (several thousand) for supply to any prospective suppliers if required.

Ooooooh does anyone have the U83160.7 or equivalent? if so how much would we owe you for one plx…. I have a pic of one that looks like ours but no idea on size there ot tech spec I need and ours is black…. http://hegemon.co.uk/index.php/hegem…-micro-switch/
saying that… the one pictured there looks a lot smaller than the one in the chair and ours has a sort of longer arm on it but… the principle id there. also do we need to replace the 2 end stop ramps for the plastic ones?

It would be quicker and easyer for you to just get an engineer in to sort it. Any good dealer will have these as standard van parts.

pat888Member
With the help of VERY kind helpful people on this forum we have it sorted now…… my parts are in sort of transit…. im LOADS wiser now, the chair is now working perfectly, The help offered on this site has sorted it all for us, the detailed help to change the fuse, the realisation that it was all caused by ourselves because we put those 2 stop bars in the wrong slots, THANK YOU ALL for the time and shared knowledge that did this all for us.. 🙂 🙂 The true meaning of A Help Forum….. the parts I am getting are just standbys 🙂 in case…
