Acquired Acorn 180 / Need Direction

Hello Everyone,
I bought an Acorn 180 at a estate sale yesterday for my neighbor who’s 85 yo and getting out of hospital after a serious fall. Unfortunately, I could not test this out because of lack of power and dead batteries I assume. It really looks in mint condition and the fact that she is going to need this to continue to live in her home I had to take the chance. I also know that it was fully functional until the owners demise 4 months prior so the house has been empty.
These are only my ideas of what I’m going to do for this to work in my neighbors house and please any input, suggestions, and advice will be greatly appreciated. I was going to purchase new batteries but will try to charge existing first. Question will a 12v trickle charger work on charging these batteries, closely monitored.? I am mounting this on straight stairway and I’m going to use the option lower track raiser in the permanent down position which I’ll unhook from the main power box. Question: Can I do this and what else would i have to do? I will relocate the bottom park / charger sensor ? to the bottom of track now instead of right above hinge point on track. Question: would that be correct in my thinking? Or is that sensor used to signal the Upper / Lowering of track? It didn’t come with a manual but thanks to this site I have a lot more knowledge than what I did. Again anything else I should know, Please send it to me.

Wow I think you have bitten off a lot more than you can chew here. No qualified stairlift engineer would condone this type of botch up of any stairlift. The only direction I would point you in is to the local tip or recycle depot to dump this before you endanger this poor 85 year old 🙁

I appreciate your feed back and concerns. Believe me Ian, I would never jeopardize anyone’s health and well being. I have over 30+ years of custom building and renovation in both residential / commercial fields with plumbing and electrical grandfather onto my builders license. I know Ian, that I have the mechanical aptitude to install this with the proper information from schematics and techs like yourself. I just need someone to answer my questions that i may have and any addition input that i should know. I also know that I will bring in a tech to reprogram the stairlift after I’m done installing and also to confirm my work.
I can see from your reply that you streak at re-using the option lever track, So I will order track to replace. ( Sorry,I’m from the time that we reuse and make everything work if its not broken and to save a dollar.) This is why I said in my original post my idea was, but that doesn’t mean I’m doing it that way without other input first because I do listen and follow direction real good.

Wow. Ianb. Pretty harsh considering he said it was in good condition and operational 4 months prior. BillyB, you will need to set it up, move the charging points, and reprogram the stairlift. All of which you can do yourself. All of the track pieces come apart and can be reassembled in the order that you need. You may need to purchase additional track pieces depending on your situation. Very noble of you to help your neighbor. It stinks that Acorn is so difficult to work with. If the staircase is straight, there are cheaper stairlift do-it-yourself options out there. Not harsh at all. Guys like you will do more harm than good. After all you were the guy who posted instructions on your blog on how to cheat an osg 🙁 You need to leave certain things to the professionals in my view.
