SUMMARY:Know Your Rights and Responsibilities: Disability Issues in Employment
DESCRIPTION:The Disability Law Center of MA will conduct an employment training. If you have questions about your rights or responsibilities join us.\n\n\nThe ADA and other federal and Massachusetts laws provide for protections from discrimination based on disability in employment. During this training\, attorneys from the Disability Law Center will discuss the rights of employees and obligations for employers set out in these laws. We will cover how and when to request a reasonable accommodation\, strategies for participation in the interactive process\, whether and when to disclose a disability at the application stage or on the job\, and remedies for alleged discrimination. We will also discuss the FMLA and other leave-related issues\, and how people with disabilities can protect their jobs if a disability or other serious health conditions necessitate time off from work. We will use examples to illustrate these concepts. There will be time for questions. \nThe New England ADA Center is excited to host the Disability Law Center for this employment training. This training is free and open to the public. A zoom link will be emailed to all registrants. \n\n\n\nFor questions and to request accommodations such as closed captioning\, contact Stacy Hart at adainfo@NewEnglandADA.org or 617-695-0085. Please request accommodations such as closed captioning by February 2nd.

Rebekah Taussig grew up believing that her disabled body made her an outsider and disqualified her from some of the most fundamental parts of being human. In this talk\, she resists that narrative\, exploring how our perspectives might expand if we brought disability to the center. How might our understanding of beauty\, love and romance\, movement\, work\, and storytelling evolve and transform? What new possibilities might unfurl as we imagine together?\n \nRebekah Taussig is a Kansas City writer and teacher with her doctorate in Creative Nonfiction and Disability Studies. She has led workshops at the University of Michigan\, the University of Kansas\, and Davidson College on disability representation\, identity\, and community. Her work appears in publications from TIME and The Florida Review to Design*Sponge and Good Company. Released by HarperOne in August 2020\, her memoir in essays\, Sitting Pretty: The View from My Ordinary Resilient Disabled Body provides a nuanced portrait of a body that looks and moves differently than most. She also runs the Instagram platform @sitting_pretty\, where she crafts “mini-memoirs” to contribute nuance to the collective narratives being told about disability. She lives in a tiny\, old house with her fussy family of tenderhearted snugglers. You can follow her work and sign up for her newsletter at www.rebekahtaussig.com.

SUMMARY:'All Inclusive?' - Disability Equality
DESCRIPTION:Disability equality – Understanding the Equality Act and how it applies to all children’s and youth work.\n\n\n\n\nDisability equality – Understanding the Equality Act and how it applies to all children’s and youth work. \nThis seminar looks at: \nDisability Equality Legislation Guidelines; detail regarding terms used and current disability legislation\, specifically the Equality Act 2010\, in relation to children’s/youth work. \nUrban Saints Disability Equality Policy; how Urban Saints applies disability equality law. \nFurther Supporting Information; tips and resources to help and support you. \nThe seminar provides you with everything you need to better understand the legal requirements under current disability equality legislation to treat equally children\, young people\, and adult team members with additional needs or disabilities within groups\, camps and overseas mission trips etc. \nThe ‘All Inclusive?’ – Disability Equality training programme includes: \n– A comprehensive colour A4 training workbook with a wealth of information and resources sent to each participant in advance. \n– Access to a series of videos to explore and learn through\, covering a range of topics related to disability equality legislation and how to apply it. \n– Finally\, a Zoom session including discussion groups\, case studies\, Q&A\, and signposting to further resources to investigate\, as we wrap this programme up together. \n– Participants completing all three Urban Saints ‘All Inclusive?’ training programmes will receive a certificate. \n“It’s an amazing opportunity to gather information and informed advice and tips. Answered my questions and uncertainties and made me feel equipped and excited about how I can work alongside all young people.” \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Mark Arnold: \nMark Arnold is the Additional Needs Ministry Director at leading national Christian children’s and youth organisation Urban Saints and is Co-Founder of the Additional Needs Alliance\, a vibrant and fast-growing online community. He is an enthusiastic national and international advocate for children and young people with additional (special) needs or disabilities and is passionate about enabling everyone engaging with them to be inspired\, trained and well resourced. \nMark is the Churches for All Executive Officer and a Living Fully Network partner\, a member of the Council for Disabled Children and the European Disability Network\, and writes a monthly additional needs column for Premier Youth and Children’s Work (YCW) magazine. He blogs as the national award winning ‘The Additional Needs Blogfather’\, and is father to James who is Autistic and has associated Learning Difficulties and Epilepsy. \nTo find out more about how Mark and his work can help you\, contact him at: marnold@urbansaints.org or @Mark_J_Arnold \nTestimonials regarding the ‘All Inclusive?’ programme: \n“You’ve done some amazing work… You do some brilliant training\, I’ve been to it\, I highly recommend other people to look that up.” Martin Saunders\, Director of Innovation and Deputy CEO\, Youthscape \n“Thank you for the training session this evening. I think it worked really well and was definitely a good substitute for us not being able to be together properly. It was actually really good to see some lovely faces during this lockdown period too. So thank you :)” \n“It was really good to receive the online videos and workbook information well in advance of the Zoom meeting. I found that really helpful as it can be tricky fitting everything in at the moment with children being home too. The breakout session during the meeting was a good idea as it gave us the opportunity to chat a bit more freely\, so thank you.” Re: ‘All Inclusive?’ – Diocese of Winchester – May 2020 \n“This is a huge thank you for last Saturday’s zoom training and all the materials you sent prior to it. As a mainstream large infant school SENCO\, I’ve been finding it surprisingly tricky to adapt what happens in school to our kids church…mostly because I’ve not thought about implementing as much of the strategy as I should/could have. For example\, I use the exact same one page profiles you showed us at school\, but embarrassed to say I’ve never used them in church. So I found it so useful to think practically about the tools I know I’m already fortunate enough to know something about and using them in a church context. \nLots of food for thought for me to share with our team\, especially around interest groups vs age groups. Once we can eventually get back in our building for kids church that is! Thanks again. Your passion for and knowledge about inclusion around additional needs shines through and is truly inspirational. You’ve inspired me!” All Inclusive Online – August 2020 \n“Thank you so much for this morning\, that was so incredibly valuable. I really appreciated the way you referred to siblings who are so often forgotten. The meerkat/lions analogy is brilliant\, I’ve got a feeling I’m never going to forget that. Also\, the focus on the people who are not yet part of our community but need somewhere they can belong. Annnd finally\, the need to make sure that we include God – oh yeah! I feel convicted ?! Thank you so very much for your work.” All Inclusive? Online – August 2020

Led by disabled people\, its aim is to bring about a society where disabled people can participate fully in all areas of life. Breakthrough was founded by disabled people with a very strong identity\, rooted in the Social Model of Disability – and in disabled people’s collective campaigning in Manchester and beyond. This workshop will explore disabled people’s sense of identity and pride. It has been set up by Breakthrough UK\, but the session will be about your views and experiences. Objectives of this workshop: To explore what you think about the identity of a “disabled person” and “disabled people”.To find out what encourages and what discourages people to identify as a disabled person. To share experiences and support around our identities as disabled people. To identify the current threats to disabled people’s identity and what this means for disabled people and our campaigns. We hope that this conversation will form part of a bigger project Breakthrough are exploring about disabled people’s sense of identity and pride.
