the technique is to get the tightness of the bolts to the point where they hold the seat up but are not over tightened as to make to make it difficult to operate or break the seat pad! which does happen when you raise or lower it
its not just a cable, it’s a roller that mounts onto the footrest pivot bolt, pivot pins for the seat/these replace the bolts and a cable locating pin that mounts onto the seat frame, then you have to tension the footrest springs to hold the the footrest up but allow the link cable to pull it down when you pull the seat down
honestly unless its difficult to operate the footrest keeping the two separate is the better option, the amount of customers that preferred it over the footrest link cable system after I’d converted it as a stop gap while we ordered a new cable is the reason why i have spares in my garage 🙂
