Stannah 260 gets stuck and blows fuse

Hi all. Our 14 month old Stannah 260 stops and blows its 500mA fuse when it reaches the point where the rails start down the stairs. On the flat from its parking place there is no problem – we have tried this a few times and it stops/blows at exactly the same point each time. Any advice or experiences would be most helpful as it was serviced only 6 weeks ago. Thank you.

You have a wiring short on one of the trunions most likely, if it’s 14 months old isn’t it still under warranty?
It happens because either a wire has become trapped or has broken away from its push on connector, it’s a simple case of replacing the affected wiring loom. -

It will be in one of 2 looms either skate loom. check visualy both looms for breaks in the outer insulation and copper showing . Its a an earth fault that should be easy to find if its happening at the same point all the time. I have had the exact same scenario as you and found it to be in the top skate a spade connection onto one of the switches was contacting a metal part when the char hit a bend. Easy fixed by slightly bending the switch back but only enough for the contact to stop and not interfering with the working of the safe edge. As for it being under warranty not all stannah lifts carry 2 year warranty ie if its grant purchased it will come with 1 year as do second units. If its not obviously visable you may need to call in an engineer

Thank you so much – Kevin and Ianb for your advice. The chair had a 500mA Slow fuse but we tried 500mA Fast fuses which blew. A thorough check of all wiring and positioning and a replacement 500mA Slow fuse seems to have done the trick! My husband says the original fuse was tired but now we know where and what to look for in any future recurrence.
Thank you too for the heads-up about warranty. I rang Stannah about this as we have a new self-funded stairlift on which Stannah give a two year guarantee and twice yearly service – we got only one year’s guarantee and one service included. This is because we live in N Ireland and are at the mercy of the sole Stannah agent here who is free to give the minimum the law requires. Anyone living outside Stannah’s installation area should be aware of a restriction such as this.
